HOW THE " PURIFIERS" AND "TOTEM" CAME ABOUT: Early one foggy morning I was visited by a flock of "buzzards". They landed in a couple of dead trees in the back yard and proceeded to periodically stretch out their wings to dry and then sink back into silent repose.
I ran to get my camera and took several pictures feeling the magic of the moment. In my mind I was already painting them and the name of the painting came to me, "The Purifiers". I wasn't sure why or what that meant so I did some research and found that throughout history there were myths, legends and beliefs about the qualities of the vulture/buzzard. Interestingly, the word "purifiers" in reference to vultures/buzzards was in several traditions including the Cherokee Indians. Purification: death and rebirth--new vision.
I look at such visitations as having meaning, and for me, having recently moved here after being in the same place in Florida for many years, "purification" certainly fit the Cherokee interpretation. I have already experienced the feeling of death of the old and rebirth to the mountains and am looking forward to ever more new visions in my new life here.
